Poll result: Last man sitting

The poll question was "Who will be the last man sitting? (Last to finally play a game this season)" Sterling is at the NHL level, with Lehman and Turple currently assigned to the AHL Chicago Wolves. A forward, a defenseman and a goalie.

The responses:
Brett Sterling 4%
Scott Lehman 4%
Dan Turple 91%

Sterling played last night for the Thrashers, scoring a very Brett Sterling-like goal, so it's just Lehman and Turple left now.

Poll: Predict Anderson's bench minors

The poll question was "How many bench minors (unsportsmanlike) will John Anderson's Thrashers get this season?"

The main thing I got out of the answers is that everyone agrees Anderson is an old dog. He's either already learned his lesson and will keep quiet, or will continue to be penalized like in Chicago. He won't stop at 1 bench minor -- only 2% voted for that choice. The most popular answer was 4-6 times, with 31% of the vote. I believe that's what I voted as well.

Results:
0 -- 17%
1 -- 2%
2-3 -- 29%
4-6 -- 31%
7 -- 19%

I think from this you could set a betting line of about 3.5 bench minors.

Everyone has a beast they fight, and Anderson knows he needs to be better with the refs. Another thing he should probably work on is not chewing gum and blowing bubbles on the bench when the TV cameras come out.

Above is Anderson with his trusty writing pad. He's unorthodox in not using a dry erase board for drawing up plays. "I like my pad there because I can rip it off," he said after the game. I asked him about how the coaches were getting along on the bench. "Oh we were arguing," he joked. "No, it worked out really well. Actually we had a little problem with our mic on the bench to cut clips, but I guess that's why we do exhibition games. It's not just for the players but for the coaching staff."

Anderson and Randy Cunneyworth interacting on the bench.

Assistant coach Steve Weeks served as the eye in the sky, and he'll likely do that most of the year. He's been the "systems" coach for a few years because he has a good eye for the macro level.

At least there are no Swedes to break in during preseason this year, with their guaranteed too many men calls. Last year Toby Enstrom went through it. In Sweden, players have more leeway on line changes so when they get to the NHL they often get whistled for it. Swede Patric Hornqvist took two too many men penalties for Nashville on Thursday.

In other news, former Thrashers draft pick Mike Hamilton has been invited to Quad City Flames camp as a tryout.

Poll results: Readers would move Sterling on Top 20

In the latest Thrashers Prospects Annex poll, the question was "Which prospect would you have moved up or down the most on the Top 20?" This is of course referencing HF's recent Top 20.

Results:
50% said Brett Sterling (who was 5th)
33% said Chad Denny (not ranked)
8% said Angelo Esposito (who was 4th)
4% said Boris Valabik (who was 9th)
4% said Andrew Kozek (not ranked)

Since Sterling was 5th on the list, we can only assume readers wanted to see him moved down. I understand that thinking, given that he hasn't produced much at the NHL level. He moved from third to fifth this time because of it, with Holzapfel and Esposito slotting in ahead. But, the list is mostly about top potential, and if Sterling works out, he'll be a sniper and that's pretty valuable. He also has his head in the right place and is a hard worker, which is important.

The second most popular choice was Chad Denny. I included him as a choice because he fell off the list this time, taking the biggest plunge from 10th to not ranked. Blog readership includes a lot of Gladiators fans, so we can assume this helped his poll numbers. But Gladiator fans will also note that Denny was seeing third-pairing minutes in the ECHL, and not much time on the power play. Agree or disagree with Gladiators coach Jeff Pyle on what you will, but I think he distributes the ice time pretty fairly -- guys play what they earn. Denny spending the season at the ECHL level isn't career-ending, but it's evidence of a problem.

I was a little surprised more people didn't go ga-ga over goals and vote for North Dakota's Andrew Kozek. Perhaps college hockey doesn't get enough pub to have that kind of effect.

Poll result: readers think Sterling will see 5-15 more games

In this week's poll, I asked "How many NHL games will Brett Sterling play this year?" He has already played 10.

The voting came out this way
52% said 15-25 games
26% said 11-15 games
21% said 10 games (current total), in other words, won't be called back up
0% said 26+ games

So this means that a majority of readers think Sterling will play between 5 and 15 more games. A little more than a cup of coffee. I think Bryan Little will be back to Atlanta before Sterling, so it would take a couple injuries on scoring lines to get him back up.

Sterling has 21 goals in 30 AHL games this year, and with 42 games left in the season, is on pace to score exactly 50 goals (he had 55 last year). He's +5, on a team that ranges from +18 (Joel Kwiatkowski) to -11 (Scott Lehman).

Poll results: prospect to be traded away

In the Thrashers Prospects Annex inaugural poll, I asked "Which is most likely to happen by the end of the season?" and gave five prospect-related choices. It's fitting that we look at the results on the day of the first presidential primary. A full 40% of voters thought that a prospect would be traded away before the deadline, more than double any other choice.

40% Prospect traded away before deadline
20% Pavelec recalled to ATL
16% Enstrom wins Calder
13% Sterling scores 50 goals in AHL
10% Lehman sticks in Chicago rest of year

Voters are probably remembering last year, when both Alex Bourret and Braydon Coburn were dealt away. This kind of thing seems normal to them now perhaps. In the history of the Thrashers though, this was very unusual. So I would say that the likelihood isn't high -- medium, perhaps. Also, I think that Bourret would have been traded soon no matter what time of year it was. It was just convenient that lots of teams were talking then.

The second most popular choice was Ondrej Pavelec recalled to Atlanta. The luck the Thrashers have had with goaltenders and injuries made this a popular choice. It got my vote.

In other notes today, based on the Google traffic to the blog, I sniff something going on with Buffalo's AHL affiliation. Remember they broke up with Rochester and are rumored to be going to Portland. I'm guessing something is firming up right about now.
